Chrétien has only ever played for his local club, having been linked with AS Nancy since the age of five. After leaving for two years to attend the Medina academy in Meuse, FC Metz and AJ Auxerre showed an interest in signing him, but he chose to remain loyal to Nancy. However, it was not until February 2004 that he signed his first professional contract with the club, only making his league debut in November 2002. When he plays for Nancy he uses his mother's maiden name Chrétien, but when representing Morocco, he uses his father's surname Basser. His current contract lasts until 30 June 2010.
On January 11, 2009, Chrétien was linked with a move to the English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers in the English media, with Rovers boss Sam Allardyce said to be interested in the right-back.
On 1 September 2011, Chrétien left his hometown side Nancy to join the Turkish side Bursaspor on a three-year contract.
A French youth international, Chrétien earned his first call-up from his father's native Morocco in a friendly against Tunisia on 7 February 2007. He was a member of the Morocco squad that participated in the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
